Ecotourism Officer WCS Cambodia

Announcement Description

The Wildlife Conservation Society, founded in 1895, has the clear mission to save wildlife and wild places across the globe. WCS’s goal is to conserve the world’s largest wild places in 16 priority regions, home to more than 50% of the world’s biodiversity. We currently manage about 500 conservation projects in more than 60 countries.

WCS has been working in partnership with the Royal Government of Cambodia since 1999, providing technical advice and support for the conservation of key habitats and species across the country.

Announcement position

• Location: Northern Plains, Preah Vihear Province
• Working hours: Full-time
• Schedule: May 2021-March 2022 (with potential to extend)

Responsibilities

This position requires an individual who is able to travel to remote areas for up to 3 weeks at a time, with Preah Vihear as home base. The work will be implemented in the Northern Plains Landscape including Phnom Tbeng National Heritage Park (PTNHP), Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary (KPWS)
and Chhep Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS). The Ecotourism Officer is expected to travel to existing and potential ecotourism sites within Preah Vihear Province to conduct the following non-exhaustive list of tasks:

  • Work closely with WCS Technical Advisors, Community Protected Area (CPA) Teams, local
  • government, ecotourism operators and community stakeholders to further the success of
  • ecotourism projects in the Northern Plains;
  • Develop and maintain good communications with the same in order to promote mutual trust
  • and strong program-stakeholder relationships;
  • Identify needs and provide relevant training for community members and Department of
  • Environment (DoE) counterparts;
  • Facilitate the development of ecotourism guidelines, internal rules, and regulations for
  • community ecotourism in the target areas;
  • Facilitate and lead meetings with communities, DoE and ecotourism operators to discuss
  • ecotourism and support communities to carry out the necessary steps for implementation;
  • Assist communities with financial management, including transparent reporting on income
  • received from ecotourism activities;
  • Assist communities to develop awareness-raising materials for their specific requirements;
  • Work with Ecotourism Committees and Village Committees to monitor and evaluate the
  • success of any ecotourism projects especially with respect to compliance agreements;
  • Work with the NPL Team to ensure community compliance with conservation and livelihood
  • agreements/contracts;
  • Work with the NPL Team to collect, collate, and analyze monitoring and evaluation data;
  • Prepare workplans, budgets and manage activities for ecotourism team in all sites in KPWS and
  • CWS in a timely manner;
  • Assist in organizing logistics of the project – transport, accommodation, materials and other;
  • Fulfill other related project work as required by the Landscape Manager and Technical Advisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Natural Resource Management, Tourism, Management, Business Administration or related fields.
  • At least 2-years field work experience on community organizing/development, especially in alternative livelihoods development and or ecotourism development in Cambodia.
  • Experience in training and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in Khmer.
  • Good speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
  • Good computing skills.
  • Knowledge of key biodiversity issues including key wildlife species.
  • Able to work in remote area with low levels of technical support on site, with significant portions of time spent living and working in communities.
  • Ability to travel by motorbike, and stay in remote areas.
