Background

Geres, a French NGO, has been active in Cambodia for the last 25 years. Geres’ main focus areas are sustainable energy solutions, climate change mitigation and adaptation, reduction of energy poverty, and improvement of livelihoods.

GERES started a four-year project, co-funded by the European Union through the SWITCH-Asia programme, to promote sustainable energy practices in the garment sector in Cambodia.

The overall objective of the project is to decrease environmental impacts while increasing competitiveness in the Cambodian garment industry, through higher investment in sustainable energy practices (such as energy-efficient technologies, integration of solar energy, switch to sustainable wood sources or agro-residues and good operations management), with a particular focus on SMEs.

Together with GGGI (Global Green Growth Institute) and the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC), Geres will support and facilitate the adoption of sustainable energy practices and technologies in garment manufacturing SMEs in Cambodia.

Mission and objectives

The Junior project engineer will support garment factories to pursue Energy efficiency and Renewable energy. After an initial period of training, s/he is expected to provide technical guidance on energy efficiency solutions and sustainable practices in Industry relating to electrical and thermal processes and utilities in garment factories. S/he will also be involved in monitoring, professional training, and knowledge sharing.

S/he works under the supervision of the Technical Coordinator.

Duties

Technical responsibilities (with focus on sustainable energy, electrical and/or thermal processes /utilities):

  • Take part in energy assessment (energy audits) preparation and realisation in Garment factories; support external international auditors to ensure smooth data collection and clear communication with factory teams;
  • Contribute to meetings, training and mentoring of garment factories;
  • Analyse audit results and findings; conduct international benchmarking of sustainable energy solutions;
  • Support with research on a range of relevant technical and organizational clean energy solutions based on results from audits and proven good practices;
  • In collaboration with the project team, advisors and other implementation partners, develop sector-relevant knowledge products, including technical briefs, video tutorials and training workshops;
  • Support the mainstreaming of the main learnings into professional training programmes targeting factories’ executives, managers and operators; Contribute in developing expert-reviewed curricula;
  • Support the planning and implementation of energy-efficient investments and practices in factories through mentoring the factory teams; conduct monitoring campaigns on energy consumption, costs and reduction of GHG emissions in key pilot factories; process and showcase results;
  • Contribute to identifying and involving irrelevant international consultants, suppliers and solution providers.

Coordination responsibilities:

  • Support the technical coordinator and international team leader in the sound management and implementation of other project activities such as:
    – Overseeing planning, quality, timely delivery of project outputs, monitoring and taking corrective actions when needed;
    – Reporting on expenses;
    – Collecting information, drafting reports and ensuring timely reporting to donors and partners;
    – Supporting and facilitating the integration of project achievements, procedures and lessons learned into other projects, activities, policies and strategies;
    – Organizing and ensuring the project knowledge management and archiving.
  • In cooperation with Geres’ and GGGI’s international experts in gender and inclusion, contribute to the mainstreaming of gender issues in the implementation of the project.

Contribution to the development of GERES activities in his/her field of intervention:

  • Provide technical inputs and insights for the design of new projects, activities or innovations;
  • Occasionally represent the project towards implementation or institutional partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master/ engineer degree (required) in energy, electrical, thermal, environmental, chemical, mechanical or industrial engineering, steam management, or any relevant field;
  • Minimum 6 months of work experience (internships may count towards work experience);
  • Understanding of industry or commercial buildings use or production of energy, maintenance, retrofits, design, planning, etc. is a strong asset; experience managing projects, plans, relationships with partners and customers is an asset.
  • Good understanding of energy management and energy efficiency;
  • Excellent ability to understand concepts and to analyse situations, facts, observations, problems;
  • Excellent communication, presentation, reading and writing skills in English; ability to summarize clearly;
  • Excellent data collection and analysis skills;
  • Inter-cultural communication skills with different stakeholders (factory managers and operators, international and local experts, suppliers, university researchers);
  • Very good autonomy, organization, coordination skills;
  • Fluency in English and Khmer mandatory, Chinese an asset. Fluency in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PPT) and Internet browser.
